Description

Make some claim about percentages of people who like your product.

Show statistical workings and boffins doing experiments and calculations. Use Greek letters and other mathematical symbols.

Use words like percentage, proven, mean and standard deviation. If you are feeling enthusiastic, you can even use such stuff as Spearman Correlation, Anova and Kruskal-Wallas.

Example

Nine out of ten people we asked said they preferred it.

Statisticians have proven a clear correlation between Pona cream and smoother skin.

Discussion

'Lies, damned lies and statistics' is a claim made by British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli in the 19th century. Statistics, like science is something mysterious to most people, and statisticians are experts who therefore must be believed.

It has been said that 80% of statistics are made up on the spot. The actual research that is behind the claims made would make most statisticians blanch. You can get impressive-sounding percentages with very weak statistical validity.
