To insert this into your library, simply click on the 3-line 'hamburger' on the top right of the library panel, click on 'Import Macros...' and point it at the downloaded file. Then click on the layer for which you want a model and click once on the appropriate macro in the 'Dave's SC Grading Analogous' library group category. You can also drag and drop the .macros file onto the image area.

Discussion

The simplest way to explore these macros is just to click on them and look at the results. You can quickly click on successive macros and hit 'accept' to install any of these.

This is a set of 24 macros that create a single Selective Colour adjustment layer, plus an HSL layer before and after this, to enable a wide range of colour shifts (although most change will be subtle tweaks of the chosen colour grading).

Colour grading typically reduces the number of colours while giving extra emphasis to selected colours. This macro set does this, with the specific principle of giving emphasis to three colours which are nearby on the colour wheel.

Note that the colour reduction schemes here act by replacing one colour with another. They do not act on highlights and shadows (another method used for colour grading), which may be achieved using the Split Toning adjustment.

It may be useful to review the macros using a colour wheel (single or four), copies of which are available in the free download of Dave's Test Cards.

Note: At the time of production, if you run a macro when a group is selected, the group will be rasterized (turned into a pixel layer), which can be a real problem. This bug has been reported and may get fixed in future. In the mean time, if you have a group that this macro creates selected (is blue), click Select/Deselect Layers before running another macro.

Macros

The macros are divided into two groups:

• Primary-Secondary: this uses the six colour position of Red, Yellow, Green, Cyan, Blue and Magenta

  • Within this group is a sub-division of 'Basic' and 'Centre-Triadic types'

  • 'Basic' gives equal precedence to all three colours

  • 'Centre-Triadic' gives greater precedence to the centre colour

• Adjacent-Tertiary: This uses the twelve colour positions to include the tertiary colours of Orange, Lime, Spring, Teal, Violet and Rose

  • As these are closer colours, they simply are based on the Basic principle of equal precedence

The macros are named in the format 'CCC XXX Analogous', where CCC are the three adjacent ('analogous') colours, and XXX is the method of colour grading used.

Analogous colour groupings are:

• Primary-Secondary:

  • Magenta-Red-Yellow

  • Yellow-Green-Cyan

  • Cyan-Blue-Magenta

  • Red-Yellow-Green

  • Green-Cyan-Blue

  • Blue-Magenta-Red

• Adjacent-Tertiary:

  • Rose-Red-Orange

  • Red-Orange-Yellow

  • Orange-Yellow-Lime

  • Yellow-Lime-Green

  • Lime-Green-Spring

  • Green-Spring-Cyan

  • Spring-Cyan-Teal

  • Cyan-Teal-Blue

  • Teal-Blue-Violet

  • Blue-Violet-Magenta

  • Violet-Magenta-Rose

  • Magenta-Rose-Red

You can click one macro after another to try them out one after another, without Applying them. The macros create individual groups so can easily be removed with a selection click and hitting Delete.

In the controls given, 'Rotate' and 'Shift' adjust colour by using the Hue control within an HSL layer, before and after the Selective Colour layer. When you adjust Rotate in one direction, you can return to a more familiar (yet changed) colour set by adjusting the Shift in the opposite direction by the same amount.

The 'Strength' control adjusts Opacity of the overall group. After the macro has been selected, you can open the group and adjust these in the native adjustments there.

Macros can be stacked by running one after another. In this way you can create multiple colour schemes.
