Discussion

This is a set of 36 macros that create a single Selective Colour adjustment layer with preset sliders to achieve the desired effect. In these, only the Whites, Blacks and Neutrals are used to add colour to whiter, blacker and greyer parts of the image.

Tonal colour grading is different to normal colour grading in that tonal grading is applied in increasing amounts to monochrome parts of the image, while normal colour grading (including in the related 'Dave's SC Grading Dyadic') acts on colours.

The interface for this set of macros is different from other, colour-oriented Dave's SC macros, as it offers a greater level of control and only outputs to a single Selective Colour control. The basic output shows the colour overlays on the more monochrome areas and needs further adjustment with a combination of Opacity and Blend Modes to create a final image.

Controls

Controls in each macro include:

Basic sliders as found in Selective Colour under Whites, Blacks and Neutrals:

  • Cyan (Whites)

  • Magenta (Whites)

  • Yellow (Whites)

  • Cyan (Neutrals)

  • Magenta (Neutrals)

  • Yellow (Neutrals)

  • Cyan (Blacks)

  • Magenta (Blacks)

  • Yellow (Blacks)

Other controls:

  • Blend Mode (drop-down with 'Normal' as default)

  • Opacity (default 100%)

Note that these other controls could have been set to such as a blend mode of Soft Light, but are left as they are seen so you can first see the actual colour as calculated before deliberately blending and/or adjusting Opacity.

Macros

The macros are named in the format 'XXX-YYY NNN Dyadic', where XXX is the colour for whites, YYY is the colour for blacks, and NNN is Complementary or Asymmetric. Complementary dyads are opposites on the colour wheel, such as red and cyan. Asymmetrics are set at 60 degrees to one another, such as Red and Green. Asymmetrics allow for pairing between primary colours, secondary colours and tertiary colours. The angle of 60 degrees avoids the proximity of Analogous colouring effects. Each pairing, Complementary and Asymmetric, offers two-way options, such as having one for Red-Green and another for Green-Red.

The XXX colour pairs (also reversed) are:

  • Complementary:

    • Primary/secondary colours: Red-Cyan, Blue-Yellow, Green-Magenta

    • Tertiary colours: Orange-Teal, Violet-Lime, Rose-Spring

  • Asymmetric:

    • Primary/secondary colours: Red-Green, Red-Blue, Green-Blue, Magenta-Cyan, Magenta-Yellow, Cyan-Yellow

    • Tertiary colours: Orange-Spring, Lime-Teal, Spring-Violet, Teal-Rose, Violet-Orange, Rose-Lime

You can click one macro after another to try them out one after another, without Applying them. The macros create individual groups so can easily be removed with a selection click and hitting Delete.
