SummaryDarkness in images is often selected using luminosity, which is calculated from a combination of red, green and blue values. Yet darkeness is actually most affected by the colour with the greatest value. So here is a way of selecting these 'shades' (which may be contrasted with 'tints' where all values are higher). Extra tip: In the resulting layer (which is based on transparency) you can convert to a traditional selection using Select/Selection from Layer.
