Summary

The Technicolor system was a famous early colouration system for movies and was characterised by saturated colours and a distinctive grading or 'look'.

Here, we show several methods that can be used to create this look, including HSL selective saturation, blur, grain noise, off-blacks (with Curves) and a subtle vignette.

In another image, a different method is shown for colour adjustment with the powerful Channel Mixer. This can seem tricky, but gives more options in close RGB colour control.

Video notes

For a full effect:

  • HSL, saturation up, then reduce individual colours as needed
  • Blur, just a bit
  • Noise, for film grain
  • Curves, to reduce hard black, left node up a little, shadows down a little, anchor at middle point
  • Vignette, very soft and subtle at edges

For power colour change:

  • Channel Mixer, Red: 200,-50,-50; Green: -50, 200, -50; Blue: -50, -50, 200
  • Then adjust to suit (eg remove Blue change and do white balance)
