Detail

Publication Date: 17-Dec-20

Duration: 8:19

Effects shown are described below:

Effect control: Colour/darken/lighten

  • Add fill layer, 50% Opacity. Blend Mode: Soft Light.
  • Try black (darken), white (lighten), colour (tint)
  • Change Blend Mode, eg. to Soft Light.

VLO control: Tint shadows or highlights

Shadows:

  • Recolour, adjust Luminosity up until maximum red in shadows.
  • Opacity right down and bring up slowly (VLO: Very Low Opacity).

Highlights:

  • Recolour, adjust Luminosity down until maximum red in highlights.
  • Opacity right down and bring up slowly.

Transparency: Align layers

  • Copy/paste from another image. Reduce opacity of top layer.
  • Now you can move either layer and see where they both are.
  • Then mask and adjust as needed.

Global/local control: Quick dodge and burn

  • Duplicate, Blend Mode: Add.
  • Duplicate, Blend Mode: Linear Burn.
  • Add: Select dark subject area. Add mask. Invert. Copy mask.
  • Middle layer: Paste mask. Invert.
  • Adjust opacity of layers to control global effect.
  • Paint black on masks for local effect.

50% Combination: High pass sharpen

  • Duplicate twice.
  • Top layer, invert, set Opacity 50% (so all goes grey), add Gaussian Blur, slider up until edges are seen.
  • Group top two layers and set Blend Mode: Linear Light (or other contrast mode).
