Summary

When using a Contrast Blend Mode such as Overlay to perk up an image by creating more contrast, the whites can become too white, grabbing the eye too much, while the blacks can become too dark, losing apparent detail.

Here are two ways to counter this, one with a Curves reverse-S and another using Selective Colour to give separate Whites and Blacks controls.
