Summary

While there are excellent selection and masking methods in Affinity Photo, sometimes it is more convenient or more powerful to start with a pixel layer and build the monochrome image that will become a mask. Here's just a few of the ways you can do this.

The basic principle is to create a monochrome layer and then use the Channels tab to turn this into a saved mask in a Spare Channel. You can do a normal selection using Edit/Fill to make the selected area white and Edit/Matte to fill in transparent pixels with black. You can also use the many different ways of turning the image into monochrome and then using this as a powerful way of masking.
