Summary

Here's a way of quickly sharpening an image using the mouse wheel to control adjustment, making steps of 0.1, 1 and 10 at a time to rapidly narrow in on the desired sharpening. We also show how to use noise reduction after sharpening so you only reduce noise to a necessary effect.

To change any value in a box, you can use the slider next to it, type the number in directly, or (as in this video), roll the mouse wheel to change the value 1 at a time, up or down. Hold down the Ctrl key (only the left one on Windows works) to change 0.1 at a time, and Shift to change 10 at a time.

The principle, then, is to use the bigger step sizes to over-do sharpening or noise reduction, then use the smaller step sizes to quickly and easily step back to the minimum necessary change.

Note that when you are sharpening one area of an image, it is always good to check other areas of the image to ensure these are not over- or under-sharpened. If necessary, you can use masking and repeated sharpening to ensure all areas are sharpened appropriately.
