Summary

Blend Options (also known as Blend Ranges) has two adjustment graphs which can be a bit confusing. Here we use simple examples that show exactly what is going on and hence how you can use the power of this control. For Photoshop users, this can be seen as 'Blend If on steroids'.

In summary:

  • Blend Options changes transparency (=opacity or alpha), based on lightness (=luminosity).
  • When applied to:
    • A pixel layer, only the transparency of this layer is affected.
    • Adjustment/filter, only the transparency of the applied effect
      or 'virtual layer' is affected.
  • In both of the charts/graphs, the axes are:
    • Lightness on horizontal axis (left to right being dark to light), and
    • Transparency on vertical axis (bottom to top being transparent to opaque).
  • Transparency of the 'top' or 'after' layer is controlled by:
    • Left graph: Lightness of 'top' or 'after/virtual/visible' layer.
    • Right graph: Lightness of the 'bottom' or 'before' layer.
  • Most often, the left graph is used with pixel layers and the right graph with adjustments/filters.
