Stratagems

The six stratagems in this group are:

  1. Replace the Beams and Pillars with Rotten Timber
  2. Point at the Mulberry and Curse the Locust
  3. Play Dumb While Remaining Smart
  4. Pull Down the Ladder After the Ascent
  5. Deck the Tree with Bogus Blossoms
  6. Make the Host and the Guest Exchange Places

Stratagem group

Description

Stratagems in this group are designed to wrest control away from the enemy and are suited especially for when you are moving forward.

Methods used include diversions, confusion, entrapment and other deceptions.

Number

This is the fifth stratagem group of six.

Discussion

Gaining ground in war is often a difficult process that happens in fits and starts and may even be helped by strategic retreat. It is also important of course to sustain a supply line from your secure base that reaches to the main forward force.

Gaining ground can be helped with strength, of course, but speed also is important, especially when taking opportunities. Perhaps most of all, it is cleverness that can be most successful. Deception is used in other groups, but perhaps this one is where it is most significant.
