Observed lessons

  • When meeting the enemy in a valley, set up your troops so you can ambush them if they approach.
  • Even if they know you have prepared an ambush, they will be unwilling to test themselves against it.
  • Hiding key units from them may make them suspect an ambush.

Discussion

Soldiers invariable fear ambushes as these are typically surprise attacks from positions of advantage, such that it is difficult to defend or retaliate. All you need to do is make them think an ambush may be set and they will be far less willing to take the risk of moving through 'ambush-likely' land.
