Wednesday 23-May-07 Bottle-opening, fizz-buzz and friendsI was idly surfing the web recently and bounced through a blog showing how to open a bottle of beer with a sheet of paper -- basically, you fold and fold and fold until you have a solid block which you can use to flick off the crown cork bottle-cap. The purpose of such tricks is to impress your friends whilst bonding over a beer or three. There are many other bar games that have little other value other than creating entertainment, which is probably a good thing, so long as there is no harm done as a result on the drinking. Fizz-buzz was popular drinking game when I was in university, some years ago. You simply take turns counting from one to a hundred, but saying 'fizz' when a number contains or is a multiple of three (eg. 12 or 13) and buzz for the same with five. 15 is thus 'fizz-buzz' as it is a multiple of both three and five. The penalty for getting it wrong is, unsurprisingly, taking a swig of beer. Of course, as time progresses, more mistakes get made and the whole thing is considered increasingly hilarious by all concerned. And in such madness and abandon friends are made and friendship made stronger. There's a trick I've seen live that beats the beer-opener, by the way -- opening a bottle of champagne with a wine glass! I'll leave you to figure out how. |
