Use this checklist to help create a compelling and effective organizational values.

Must haves

  • Describes key behaviors.
  • Clear, unambiguous description.
  • Senior management believe strongly in them.
  • Does it describe what is delivered to who?
  • Are the benefits to all clear?
  • Is it motivating? Do all stakeholders buy its message?
  • Is it enduring? Will it stand the test of time?

Things to consider

  • Around 5-10 statements.
  • Additional narrative to describe values.
  • Test organizational objectives and other motivators against values.
  • Check for values behavior in performance management.
  • Anonymous survey, asking if values are really being enacted, particularly by managers.

Things to be cautious about

Be careful with these unless they really work to motivate and cause appropriate action.

  • Idealized behaviors that are unlikely to be used.
  • Values which are not fully supported by senior managers.
  • Organizational objectives which lead to breaking values.
  • Poor communication of values.
  • No action taken when people break values (particularly managers).

Things to avoid

  • Values which will not contribute to business success.
  • Values which conflict with common social norms.
  • Values which are not enacted in practice.
  • Values which are effectively for employees but not managers.
