Observed lessons

When faced with a superior force you cannot defeat, retreat.
Conceal your best soldiers, cavalry and chariots along the sides of the retreat route.
When they pursue you, attack from the sides, including with heavy weaponry.

Discussion

Retreat can encourage the opposing side to follow in an undisciplined, wild manner. This gives the opportunity to attack them when they are least expecting it.

A side attack on any force can be devastating as many soldiers are hit at once. This is even more if their army is stretched out, for example going down a trail or canyon.
