Keep them clean so you can see any problems with them (and soldiers feel a sense of discipline around them). Maintain them so they do not fail in combat. Keep spares for ad-hoc fixes. Ensure you have plenty of fuel. And let soldiers ride in them if they have to walk at other times. See also
