DescriptionAsk questions of the other person in a conversation to discover information about them, their situation and what they do or do not know. Also ask questions to draw them out, to help them to feel engaged and that you are interested in them. ExampleHow did you decide to buy a car? What are you going to do with this? Which of these do you prefer? DiscussionQuestioning is a powerful method of both gaining information and managing the flow of the conversation. An additional benefit of questioning is that people like being asked about themselves as this gives them a stage for speaking. There is an illusion of control here as the person speaking thinks they are in control while there is often a greater control with the person asking the questions. See also |
