Description

Get others to do as you ask by downplaying or deflecting their being busy as an excuse not to comply with your request.

Tell them that they will be able to carry on with what they are doing at a later date, and that what you are doing cannot be delayed. Tell them that what you want them to do is urgent.

Example

You can finish that later. I want you to help me now.

Please press pause. It will still be there when you come back after doing your chores.

You've finished the key work. I've more important things for you to do now.  

Discussion

Being 'busy' is a common excuse for not doing something. When a person says 'I'm busy' they are implying several possibilities:

  • That what they are doing is more important than what you want them to do.
  • That they are more important than you.
  • That what they are doing cannot be interrupted.
  • That stopping would be very inconvenient.

Any of these may be true, though often none are true enough that they cannot stop what they are doing and help you.
