DescriptionSynaloepha is the contraction of two words by the elimination of a vowel. ExampleDon't! I won't! Take't; 'tis yours. What is't? Would you betray's? DiscussionA lot of the shape and sound of a word is in its consonants. This means that vowels can be more easily removed, including from short words. Synaloepha is most common in the set of words like 'won't', 'can't' and so on, where the 'o' is removed from the word 'not'. It is also used more creatively in poetry, where a common synaloepha is in the removeal of 'i' from 'it'. Classification: Distortion, Omission See also |
