Description

Write a patriotic message on the back of the check. Alternatively draw a picture of the national flag.

This is more likely to be effective when there are issues of national importance in the news, such as wars, veterans or elections.

Discussion

When people are feeling patriotic, they appear similar to and hence feel closer to other people who are showing signs of patriotism. And when we feel closer to a server in a restaurant, we are more likely to give them a bigger tip.

Seiter and Gass (2005) got waitresses to write various messages (or no message) on checks, including "Have a Nice Day", "God Bless America" and "United We Stand". The message "United We Stand" led to much higher tips than no message or "Have a Nice Day".
