Out with the boys

Today was the Christmas outing with the boys from the train. We commute into London together on the early train, and someone decided that we would go to Brussels, in Belgium, for a Christmas dinner.

So we did.

It was something of a busman's holiday as seven of us caught the usual 6am train to London and then piled onto the Eurostar to Brussels. The first hilarity was when the eighth chap forgot his passport and had to race back home and then catch up on later trains. Still, we eventually all met in a bar in the famous 'Grand Place', after which we trekked through the lanes to the destination lunch venue.

Male bonding is a curious ritual that includes much no-holds-barred mutual insulting, where 'taking it like a man' is a pre-requisite for entry to the club.

As the alcohol flowed, the air turned blue and any polite listeners would have turned red. But this was not normal, polite society. This was serious guy stuff. I joined in with gusto whilst also observing the proceedings from another, curious place.

Sometimes loud, they are a good-hearted bunch who look out for one another and leave merriment in their wake. And I would not change a single one.

So I guess all that bonding stuff worked.
