DescriptionOrganizational values are key behavioral rules for the organization. They are those things which the company considers particularly important and worth making explicit. Organizations which espouse their values typically have around five to ten, written as short bullet-points. ExampleTrust and collaboration, working together for mutual success. Focus on the customer, delivering excellent experiences. Contribution to the company, creating value and working towards business objectives in everything we do. DiscussionWhilst values are effectively rules, they are seldom described as such. More commonly they are described with such words as 'things we hold dear' or 'critical beliefs'. Nevertheless, they act as rules, describing how people should behave. In practice, it is not uncommon for espoused values to be transgressed on a regular basis. Where values call for trust and integrity, people are suspicious of one another and less than trustworthy. A reason for this is that it is also common for people to be rewarded primarily for individual success and not punished for breaking values. It is also a fact that powerful people can tend to elevate themselves above 'petty rules'. When they can gain power and succeed by manipulating others, then they will do this. Others see this and become cynical about the 'so-called' values. The net result can be a demotivated workforce which works way below its real potential. See also |
