DiscussionThis is a relatively superstitious teaching where five pipes were used to listen to the enemy when they were startled, and the sound made used to interpret their thoughts. There could be some practicality in this where the sounds indicated different events such as the rattle of machinery, the cries of the fearful, and so on. The five sounds are related to the five phases of Tao: metal, wood, water, fire and earth. See also
