Kolmogorov-Smirnov test

Description

The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is used to test for 'goodness of fit' between a sample distribution and another distribution, which often is the Normal (bell-shaped) distribution.

The test compares the set of scores in the sample to a normally distribute set of scores with with the same mean and standard deviation.

Discussion

In an SPSS output, if the value in the Sig. column is less than 0.05 then data cannot be considered as Normally distributed (and parametric tests cannot be used).

The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is often shortened to the K-S test. (It is also referred to as the 'vodka test' after Smirnov brand vodka).
