DescriptionTrust and rapport can be helped simply by indicating that you care about the other person. Here are several ways you can do this:
When expressing care, do so in a kind voice. Give them time to tell you any of their troubles. If they ask after you in return, only tell them your problems if you know this will help the relationship. When you do so, keep it brief and emotionally restrained. ExampleHello there. You're looking a bit downcast. What's up? Hi Mike. How's Cyndi? DiscussionExpressing care is a demonstration of empathy (or at least a step towards it), where you show that you feel what they are feeling and say 'I am like you'. When you show such similarity to others, you set up an exchange that leads to them trusting and liking you in return. You can also show that you care passively, by doing no harm, or actively, by going out of your way to help people. The latter gives direct evidence and is a very powerful way of getting closer to other people. Sometimes people ask after others only as a means of unloading their own ills. They ask after you, ignore your response and then go on for a long time about every problem they have. This is not a good way for them to build rapport as you will soon start looking for ways to excuse yourself. See alsoTrust, Active care, Passive Care
